A family story

Situated in Sablet in the Rhone Valley, the DOMAINE DE VERQUIERE Winery is a 45-hectare estate that has been passed down from father to son over four generations. Today the Winery is managed by Thibaut CHAMFORT who is perpetuating and developing the family vineyard according to age-old traditions.
Thanks to his experience built up both in France and abroad (California and South Africa) Thibaut intends to make the most of his legacy by ensuring continued improvement of the quality of the wines and placing the name ‘Domaine de Verquière’ firmly on the map of the very best Rhone Valley wines.

It was the great-grandfather Edmond who, as a young man, purchased the buildings and gave them a new lease of life. He used to sell his wines in large barrels to the region’s best wine merchants.

The boundless energy of the grandfather Louis gave new impetus to the estate and he was the first winegrower in Sablet to sell his wines in bottles as of 1964. Louis played a very active part in gaining recognition for wines from Sablet by helping to create the Côtes du Rhône Villages Sablet appellation in 1974.

Following in the footsteps of his elders, Thibaut’s father Bernard took over the reins, respecting the quality of the wines and increasing sales through export.

Respect for nature

Thibaut has put all his passion and commitment into converting the vineyard to organic agriculture and obtained the certification in 2014 – The French Organic Wine certification FR BIO 10.

The soil is worked at depth to bring out all the true character of the terroir, making it less compact and encouraging the proliferation of micro organisms in the soil which enhances the qualities of the terroir and consequently the wine.

All this special attention paid to the vines has led to small yields, below the regulatory yields of each appellation.

Thanks to a spacious cellar and traditional vat room, Thibaut explores the potential of each parcel and each varietal.

Our Terroirs

Over the years, the Winery has purchased land in the appellations of Sablet, Plan de Dieu, Rasteau and Vacqueyras. For us each terroir is unique. We believe strongly in the importance of respecting the differences of each terroir to bring out the very best in each soil type.

From the stony, clay-chalk slopes of Rasteau to the terraces of Plan de Dieu carpeted with red pebbles, Sablet also stands out by its hillsides of soft yellow sandstone rock and its terraces of sand and red clay.

Wines

We make wines that characterize their terroir by always seeking elegance, freshness and pleasure.
We grow several grape varieties: Grenache, a noble and generous varietal, the Syrah grape which produces an elegant and fragrant wine with brilliant colour, Cinsault with all its finesse and Mourvèdre which is powerful and tannic.

Gîtes

The Winery is situated on the edge of the small Provencal village of Sablet, west of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountains, close to Vaison la Romaine.

It is ideally placed amongst the region’s most beautiful wine routes, not far from Mont Ventoux, and is a perfect stop-off point in the Rhone Valley.
